A Holistic Approach to Weight Loss

Over the next few weeks, I’m going to be sending out a series of posts specifically about weight loss and weight management. This is a topic that is fresh on my mind, as I have just recently achieved my goal of losing 30 pounds. I had a few people express interest specifically in weight loss, so I decided to write a few pieces on the topic for those of you trying to lose weight.

One of my passions in life is researching health. My Google homepage is filled with wtlosshardhealth articles, health studies, and exercise insights that I love to browse through. While I was researching weight loss, I came across a statistic from the CDC: “Percent of adults aged 20 and over with overweight, including obesity: 70.7%.” Wow. I knew the US wasn’t doing the best in this category, but this just astounded me. It also explains why weight loss is such a hot topic. Unfortunately, along with this popularity comes a lot of misinformation; mostly, the misinformation is coming from companies trying to make money selling their “easy weight loss solution”. If I could offer just one “weight loss secret” to those trying to make a weight transformation in their lives, it would be this: “Losing weight is not easy”. There is even a [controversial] stat that around 95% of people trying to lose weight fail. Motivated yet?!

I don’t mean to discourage anyone from attempting to lose weight, but I do want to explore the reason why so many diets fail… And so, I want to look at losing weight holistically, or using the 6 Dimensions of Health. The Physical Dimension is where weight loss is typically focused. For example, the science is that if you burn more calories than 6 dimensions of healthyou consume, you will lose weight. Simple, right? But, we all know that there is so much more to weight loss than this! In the Social Health Dimension, the people surrounding us influence our dietary habits, and their support can be crucial to helping us lose weight. The Mental/Emotional Health Dimension considers our stress levels, the messages we’re sending to ourselves, the confidence we have that we can be successful, and our willpower to ditch the unhealthy habits we’ve acquired for a new lifestyle. The Intellectual Dimension looks at how active our hobbies are and our interest and desire to learn more about healthy living. The Spiritual Dimension explores how aligned our lives are with our purpose and overall life goals. It also looks at taking care of the bodies God gave us. Finally, the Environmental Dimension (a 6th dimension I recently added) considers the spaces we live and work in throughout the day… possibly the restaurants we pass on the way home, the months of staying indoors due to heat or snow, and the spaces where we’ve been unsuccessful before and created unhealthy habits that have become ingrained in our lives.

There are so many factors that influence weight loss! My plan is to start exploring the Mental Health Dimension first, as I believe getting your mindset right is the singularly most important factor of weight loss. My hope is to: (1) get accurate information to you, (2) help you learn how to apply the information in your life, and (3) ultimately, help you to be successful in your weight loss journey. If you are trying to maintain or gain weight, hopefully these weight-related posts can still be applicable to you as well.
